Insurance for a car imported from abroad — when and how to buy it?

Third-party insurance for an imported car is one of the most important formalities that you must arrange no later than on the day of its registration. Find out how to buy a policy using the VIN number, what mistakes to avoid and what to do after receiving Polish plates.

Insurance for an imported car — a seemingly simple formality

Buying third-party insurance for a car imported from abroad seems simple, but in practice it is easy to make a mistake that can have legal consequences. An incorrect VIN entry, a break in insurance cover or failure to notify the insurer of Polish registration plates are common pitfalls. Below you will find the most important rules to help you avoid unnecessary stress and penalties from the Polish Motor Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG).

UFG penalties for missing insurance in 2026:

Period without insurance Passenger car Commercial vehicle / bus Motorcycle / trailer
up to 3 days 1 920 zł 2 880 zł 320 zł
up to 14 days 4 810 zł 7 210 zł 800 zł
over 14 days 9 610 zł 14 420 zł 1 600 zł

When exactly do you need to buy an OC policy?

Under the Act on Compulsory Insurance, an imported vehicle must be insured no later than on the day of its registration in Poland.

What does this mean in practice?

  • The key thing is that the insurance is concluded on exactly the same calendar day on which the car is registered.

What insurance options can you choose for an imported vehicle?

When insuring an imported car, it is worth choosing cover tailored to the value of the vehicle and your needs:

  • OC (Third Party Liability): Compulsory insurance in Poland. Protects you from the financial consequences of damage caused to other road users.
  • MiniCasco (Smart Casco): A base for full comprehensive cover at a lower price. Usually covers protection against the most severe events such as vehicle theft, fire, flooding or natural disasters.
  • AC (Autocasco / Comprehensive): Full voluntary insurance that covers the cost of repairing your car in the event of a collision that is your fault, parking damage, vandalism, theft or random events.
  • Glass insurance: Additional policy protecting against the cost of replacing or repairing the front, rear or side windows in the event of damage (e.g. from a stone impact), without losing discounts on the main comprehensive cover.
  • Assistance: Provides immediate roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown, accident or theft (e.g. towing to a workshop, replacement car, on-site repair or fuel delivery).
  • NNW (Personal Accident): Guarantees payment of compensation to the driver and passengers in the event of bodily injury, permanent health impairment or death as a result of a road accident.
