Registering a damaged car — the order of steps is key
The procedure for registering an accident-damaged vehicle differs from buying a fully functional car. The main obstacle is that the office will not permanently register a car that does not have a valid technical inspection. Before the car can be driven on the road, you must go through the stages of repair, post-accident inspection and straightening out the documentation.
1. Verification of purchase documents and vehicle status
Before you invest in repairs, make sure the vehicle has complete documents enabling registration:
- Car from the EU / Germany: A complete registration certificate is required (e.g. parts I and II in Germany). Watch out for entries about permanent deregistration or scrapping (Schrotting / Totalschaden) — vehicles with official "waste" status cannot be re-registered!
- Car from the USA: Pay attention to the entry in the title (Certificate of Title). Statuses such as Salvage or Rebuilt allow registration after repair and technical inspection, but entries such as Junk, Parts Only or Non-Repairable exclude the car from returning to the road.
- Purchase contract / Invoice: It should precisely identify the car (VIN number) and the details of the seller and buyer.
2. Temporary registration (red plates) — when you need to drive to the inspection
If the car has been repaired but does not have a valid technical inspection or licence plates, you cannot legally drive it on the road (not even to the technical inspection).
In such a case, you can apply to the Vehicle Registration Office for temporary registration by the office in order to carry out a technical inspection. You will then receive red temporary plates and a temporary permit, allowing you to legally drive to the Vehicle Inspection Station. Alternatively, the car can be transported to the inspection on a tow truck.
3. Additional technical inspection (post-accident)
A damaged or accident-damaged car must undergo an extended technical inspection at a Vehicle Inspection Station (SKP). The diagnostician will check not only the basic parameters, but above all:
- The geometry of the vehicle's chassis and axles,
- The correct operation of the steering, braking and suspension systems,
- The efficiency of the safety systems (airbags, seat belts, pretensioners),
- The correctness of the bodywork and paint repairs carried out.
If the police have previously seized the registration certificate due to damage (e.g. after a collision in Poland), the diagnostician will issue a certificate after a positive inspection, which is necessary to recover the document or complete the registration.
4. Expert valuation for excise duty on a damaged car
If you are importing a damaged car from abroad and bought it at a bargain price, the invoice alone or a low amount on the contract will not be enough for the Tax Office.
To pay lower excise duty based on the actual value of the damaged vehicle, it is necessary to submit an official opinion and valuation prepared by a certified car expert (e.g. from the PZM/DEKRA/SITK list). Check the estimated value of a damaged car with our calculator.
- What does the expert's opinion include? Photographic documentation of the damage, a detailed repair cost estimate and a calculation of the real market value of the vehicle in its damaged condition before repair.
- Why is this important? Without an official valuation, the Tax Office will challenge the amount on the contract, calculate the excise duty based on the average market value of a fault-free car and call for a top-up of the tax with interest.
